BONNIE WEINER, M.D. NAMED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF THE SOCIETY FOR CARDIOVASCULAR ANGIOGRAPHY AND INTERVENTIONS

WORCESTER, Mass. Bonnie Weiner, M.D.MSEC, MBA, a Saint Vincent Hospital/Fallon Clinic physician who is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease as well as interventional cardiology, has been named president-elect of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). She will become President in May 2007. Dr. Weiner is an integral part of the Saint Vincent Hospital Catheterization Lab team and regularly performs all types of catheter-based procedures including angiography, angioplasty, and stenting that are all designed to re-establish blood flow to the heart without surgery.

 

SCAI is the professional association for invasive and interventional cardiologists and now has a membership of over 3,200.  Its mission is to promote excellence in invasive and interventional cardiovascular medicine through physician education and representation, and the advancement of quality standards to enhance patient care.

 

Specific focus areas for the society include establishing standards and guidelines for all aspects of cardiovascular catheterization and angiography, training, and quality assurance for cardiac procedures.  She is editor of the online Carotid Stent Training program, one component of the

  

SCAI 3-tiered training program for carotid artery stenting and is one of the course directors for the SCAI National Interventional Cardiology Fellows Course.  She has served as Chair of the Lab Survey Committee, which performs quality surveys of cardiac catheterization laboratories and is currently Chair of the e-SCAI committee, which is responsible for SCAI information technologies and website development.

 

Dr. Weiner is well known and respected for pioneering cutting edge research and was instrumental for bringing PTCA—the initial form of coronary intervention--to the Worcester area. Prior to joining Saint Vincent Hospital she was the Director the of Center for Research in Invasive and Interventional Cardiology and Associate Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Clinical Technology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. During her 25 years at UMass she served in multiple capacities including Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and Director of the Heartbeat of New England Mobile Cardiac Catheterization Service.   She is currently President of Imaging Core Lab Services, a company that performs independent imaging analysis for medical device trials and is Medical Director of Boston-Biomedical Associates, a data management and regulatory consulting company.
