Cardiothoracic Surgery
The cardiothoracic surgical service of Saint Vincent Hospital performs a large number of thoracic procedures involving the lung and other mediastinal structures for benign as well as malignant diseases. This division is also involved in the minimally invasive thoracoscopic procedure that allows major resections in small incisions in the chest cavity, which minimizes the amount of pain and allows very early return to the normal daily activities. In the area of cardiac surgery, the staff performs coronary artery bypass grafting as well as valvular disease and congenital cases. There has been recent emphasis on the minimally invasive techniques in the area of coronary artery bypassing as well as valvular reconstruction with excellent results and superb patient satisfaction. An important development at Saint Vincent Hospital in recent years has been the advent and rapid expansion of the percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty program (PTCA) that allows revascularization of the heart muscle without the need for actual incisions.
