Center For Women And Infants

State-of-the-art Care for You and Your Baby

Saint Vincent Hospital's Center for Women and Infants at Worcester Medical Center is a new facility opened in April 2000. As a state-of-the-art facility, it is fully equipped with private LDRs (labor, delivery and recovery rooms) and spacious, private postpartum rooms, fetal monitors, and obstetrical ultrasound. More importantly, the Center has a highly skilled team of obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, obstetrical and postpartum nurses, as well as highly skilled neonatologists, pediatricians, and nursery nurses who are present for high-risk deliveries and to care for your baby.

Saint Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center is also an active participant in a regional network for care of high-risk mothers and infants.

Childbirth Preparation Classes

At the Center for Women and Infants, staff encourages parents and families to be actively involved in the birth experience and with their newborn's care. To support this family-centered approach, a wide variety of childbirth preparation classes are offered: childbirth preparation, childbirth refresher, cesarean childbirth, vaginal childbirth after cesarean, sibling preparation, father-to-be, breastfeeding, prenatal exercise, newborn care and CPR, and maternity tours.

If you have any questions about any of the programs call our Childbirth Education office at 508-363-9112.

CENTER FOR WOMEN AND INFANTS

Most of us would not look forward to pain or gaining 30 or 40 pounds.  That's except of course, if you are pregnant and looking forward to bringing a beautiful, although sometimes hairless baby into the world.

The 150 people who work in the Center for Women and Infants see the miracle of birth every day.  While helping a family bring a new member home can seem glamorous on the outside, delivering babies is serious hard work for mother and staff.  "The goal or outcome here is a healthy mom and a healthy baby," said Donna Eannuzzo, RNC, BSN and the Director for the Center for Women and Infants.

When they moved to the new hospital, the Center for Women and Infants gained many pluses.  They have new beds, which they call the "Cadillac" beds of the labor and delivery industry.  Along with the beds, new mobile computers allow the staff to monitor and document a patient's progress right at bedside.  Staff members are trained in neonatal resuscitation, or "CPR" for babies.  The department has an "Antepartum Testing Room".  This area is where moms are first evaluated or "triaged" to evaluate their status in the birthing process before they are admitted.

In the Center for Women and Infants, each patient has her own private postpartum room that includes a private bath with a shower and a refrigerator.  There is even room for Dad to stay overnight.  "We try to maintain the family unit and support bonding," said Donna.  That includes educating women to the benefits of breast-feeding with an on-site lactation consultant, and offering classes for new dads.  The department will also work with a mother's midwife if she chooses this as part of her birth plan.

Security is a key issue in the department.  Much like the Secret Service, the department does not want many details of their security divulged in this article, but they do have systems such as automatic locking devices and alarms.

Some days are busier than others at the Center for Women and Infants.  But we can see from the smiling faces on the staff that helping a baby to be born is exciting and wonderful, each and every time.
