Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Critical Care Medicine offers a comprehensive range of critical care services to surgical and medical patients at Saint Vincent Hospital. The department oversees the activities of the medical and surgical intensive care units, which have combined annual admissions of over 2,000 patients.

The department, which is made up of nine intensivists, is truly multidisciplinary with faculty from such disciplines as Medicine, Anesthesiology and Pulmonary Medicine. The critical care physicians rotate among units, giving the critical care house staff a wide exposure to different practice styles and philosophies. During each month there are four medical residents, a surgical resident, and nine medical interns rotating through the department, as well as numerous third and fourth year medical students. The department jointly sponsors, with the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, a fellowship program in Critical Care Medicine; two fellows are enrolled.

The clinical service is well supported by the departments of Radiology and Laboratory Services, and immediate consultation from both medical and surgical subspecialties is readily available. Ongoing clinical research studies are available to those house officers interested in participating.
