Psychiatry - Vernon Hill Campus
The Center for Psychiatry at Saint Vincent Hospital offers a comprehensive inpatient program for adults and geriatrics requiring acute psychiatric intervention. Established in 1953, it is the oldest and the largest inpatient setting in Central Massachusetts, with a capacity for 51 patients. The center operates within a multidisciplinary treatment model and emphasizes a therapeutic milieu. The treatment team is comprised of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social service and occupational therapy. Patients are encouraged and expected to participate in their own treatment plan and in the therapeutic community as a whole. This locked unit is separated into two components: Adult Treatment Program (ATP) and Intensive Treatment Program (ITP). The ATP is structured for the patient who is capable of active participation in the milieu. Conditional voluntary admission is accepted. The ITP is structured to regulate milieu stimulation and is used for patients who need close supervision and/or assistance in controlling behavior. Involuntary and conditional voluntary admissions are accepted. A full schedule of therapeutic activities is an integral part of every patient's treatment plan. Psychotherapeutic groups provide opportunities for patients to explore psychosocial and interpersonal issues. Also offered are task and interpersonal-oriented occupational therapy groups, where patient behaviors are evaluated as a result of illness: Cognitive and functional abilities are identified and utilized in developing a comprehensive Occupational Therapy treatment plan. The attending physician participates in case conferences and/or treatment team meetings.
