The residents at Saint Vincent Hospital are often asked what a typical day may entail. There is really no optimal way to answer this question as the residents do not often have a "typical" residency program.
Currently, we carry 4 residents. There is one chief resident, two second year residents, and one first year. When the two second year residents graduate we plan on continuing with the four resident policy, accepting two residents in the 2012 residency application year. Often times at least one resident is off service at Saint Vincent Hospital and one resident is off service covering UMass Memorial Medical Center, leaving two residents on service.
One resident is the call resident covering Emergency Department consultations as well as ward consultation. Both residents cover Saint Vincent Hospital surgical cases as well as the Worcester Surgical Center. Also, there is a clinic on Monday afternoon for follow-up from Friday afternoon cases with the foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon.
The UMass Memorial Resident is typically covering cases Monday, Wednesday-Friday with the Foot and Ankle surgeon and clinic Tuesday. The first Tuesday of the month we have morning board review. The third Tuesday of the month we have morning Journal Club as well as cadaver lab when available. The last Monday of the month we have a Present Lecture meeting where the students of the month give their presentation of the month. One resident will also give a presentation.
