Bariatric Medicine Program FAQs

Who is eligible?

Talk with your primary care physician about whether or not this program is right for you. If your doctor feels that you may be a candidate, you will be referred into the program. One of the criteria to participate is a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more. If you have certain medical conditions, you may qualify with a BMI of 35 or more.

Are you ready for commitment?

The Bariatric Medicine Program is not a “quick fix” for weight loss. Success involves time and commitment to change. Time is needed for appointments with physicians, surgeons, nutrition education specialists and behavior medicine specialists. There are a number of steps required to achieve success.

A fully accredited program

The Bariatric Medicine Program at Saint Vincent Hospital in association with Fallon Clinic has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons, an organization dedicated to improving and safeguarding the care of surgical patients.

How to get started:

First, attend our Bariatric Information Meeting that is held monthly at the Five North Conference Room at Saint Vincent’s Hospital. Call the Fallon Clinic Surgery Department at (508) 368-3190 to register.

Meet with Bariatric Internist for a bariatric consult. A complete physical by your primary care provider is needed within six months of this visit.

Attend individual meetings and group sessions with a Nutrition Education Specialist.

Meet with a psychologist for an initial assessment; then attend a six-week behavioral group and regular follow-ups. Additional appointments may be required.

Achieve lifestyle changes including required weight loss and attend all scheduled appointments. This will demonstrate that you are committed to long term changes.
