Experience and an Uncompromising Quality of Care
Since performing one of the first open-heart operations in Central Massachusetts nearly 50 years ago, the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Saint Vincent Hospital has been a leader in providing the highest quality care to patients requiring open-heart surgery. Under the leadership of Robert Bojar M.D., the Division has ranked among the best in operative outcomes in Massachusetts over the past decade. Cardiac Surgery is performed by surgeons from The Cardiovascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Saint Vincent Medical Group.
Dr. Bojar, Director of Cardiac Surgery, has established a reputation as an outstanding clinical surgeon with a keen interest in medical education. He spent nearly 20 years as an academic surgeon at Tufts Medical Center, where he was actively involved in training residents and fellows to become Cardiac Surgeons and is the author of a textbook on adult cardiac surgery published in 1991 and a widely acclaimed book entitled “Manual of Perioperative Care in Adult Cardiac Surgery”.
Dr. Bojar and his associates work very closely with a dedicated team of specially trained physician assistants in cardiac surgery who provide individualized, personal care to our patients 24/7. We work closely and communicate with each patient’s cardiologist, primary care physician and family to ensure optimal care and patient satisfaction during the hospital stay and after discharge.

Manual of Perioperative Care in Adult Cardiac Surgery
Considered the gold standard for postoperative care both in the United States and internationally, this book has established the standard of care for the management of cardiac surgery patients, and forms the basis for the high quality care that is delivered at Saint Vincent Hospital. A previous edition was translated into German and with worldwide acceptance of its teaching value and to reach an even wider audience, the fourth edition has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Turkish, with a translation into Greek planned for the near future. Dr. Bojar is presently working on the fifth edition which will be published in 2010.

Patricia Zambarano, a former patient and creator of "Heart to Heart" cough pillows inspired by one she received made by Mended Hearts volunteers. Her accompanying note to our patients says, "I hope you receive comfort from this pillow. I know when I got mine, I clung to it like a security blanket. It felt like a gentle hug and reminded me of family and friends who were praying for me. I pass along best wishes for a speedy recovery. Heart to Heart."
Notes From Several of Our Patients
"Thank you so very much for all the special care you gave my husband. He is home now doing wonderful. Hard to believe he was in surgery on November 28 having a four-way by-pass. His life and present health is thanks to the Good Lord and all of you at Saint Vincent Hospital. Thank you. Happy New Year".
"Both Dennis and I wish to express our gratitude to you and your staff for taking such wonderful care of him during his triple by-pass and his care after. Many thanks for giving him back renewed health and a healthy heart."
"I would like to thank all the members of the team, for giving up their June 21, 2008 Saturday on my behalf. You are all loving, dedicated members of an elite team. I am not easily impressed by anyone or anything, but since all of you have entered my life, I became impressed with the love that you share with your fellow human beings, your compassion and your professionalism. I & my family will never forget what you all have done for us. We will be praying that you all have long healthy rewarding careers and that God will grant you the strength to keep serving the sick for many, many years to come God bless you always."
"One year ago, on March 2, I experienced a major change in my life at the hands of your skillful surgery I thank God that He brought me under you and your team's very professional care in replacing my aortic valve. Following 3 months of rehab at Saint Vincent Hospital, and a hiking vacation in the mountains of Bryce and Zion National Parks, I have been an active member of the Greendale YMCA Fitness Center while at the same time skiing 20 times, thus far, at Wachusett Mountain and Waterville Valley. My new boving tissue aortic valve just hums along as I ski non-stop from summit to base for hours at a time I honestly cannot remember when I felt better in the past 20 years. So I sincerely salute you and thank you on my one year anniversary. I am indebted to you for the rest of my life. I turn 70 this summer and look forward to many years of active living. All the best."
