Stereotactic Radiosurgery (CyberKnife)

Noninvasive Tumor Treatment

At the Saint Vincent Cancer and Wellness Center, you can find tumor surgery without the knife. We’re proud to be able to offer you the option of CyberKnife® robotic radiosurgery to provide precise, painless, noninvasive radiation treatment as an alternative to open surgery in certain cases.

CyberKnife technology offers:

  • Highly targeted radiation therapy that delivers the optimal dose directly to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue
  • A treatment option for tumors that may be inoperable through traditional surgery
  • A noninvasive, outpatient treatment with minimal downtime

How CyberKnife Treatment Works

Stereotactic radiosurgery with CyberKnife focuses multiple beams of high-energy radiation on a tumor or lesion in the body. The convergence of these beams on the tumor means that this point receives a high dose of radiation while sparing surrounding tissue. This is such a precise procedure that it can be used on critical structures, such as hearing and vision nerves. Through CyberKnife, we’re able to offer a treatment option for areas that are often considered inoperable. Both cancerous and non-cancerous lesions can be treated in the:

  • Lung
  • Brain, including benign tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, vestibular schwannomas and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
  • Pancreas
  • Kidneys
  • Spine
  • Prostate

CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery vs. Open Surgery

Advantages of the CyberKnife procedure over traditional open surgery include:

  • No pain
  • Quick return to regular activity
  • No incisions or scarring
  • No invasive head or body frame
  • No anesthesia
  • Targets multiple locations during a single session
  • Accurately tracks tumors that move with breathing
  • Outpatient procedure of an hour or two
  • Only one to five treatments
