Saint Vincent Hospital provides state-of-the-art emergency medical services to the Worcester community. We have medical direction from board-certified emergency doctors available at all times. Medical professions can find an overview of our services and contact information for the emergency room, CMED and assistance with registration below:

Cardiac Arrests

  • Therapeutic hypothermia available
  • IO devices and advanced airway devices available

ST Elevation Myocardial Infarctions

  • Interventional cardiology available 24/7
  • Electrophysiology services available 24/7 for all pacemaker and AICD interventions
  • 12-lead EKG receiving capability (LIFENET)
  • Ventricular assist devices available
  • Accredited as a Chest Pain Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care

Respiratory Emergencies

  • CPAP and BiPAP available
  • Able to assist with any airway emergency

Obstetrical/Gynecological Patients

  • Obstetrical coverage 24/7
  • Level 2 Nursery provided 24/7

Psychiatric Emergencies

  • Emergency and crisis assessment team available 24/7
  • Inpatient psychiatric unit available

Inhalation and Burn Emergencies (Smoke, CO and Burns)

  • Well prepared to treat and transfer to hyperbaric chamber after evaluation
  • Ability stabilize ANY burn patient and treat accordingly
  • Cyanokits available for cyanide poisonings and smoke inhalations

Radiation Emergencies

  • Radiation Safety Officer on staff and available 24/7

Acute Strokes and TIAs

  • Certified by the Department of Public Health as a Primary Stroke Center
  • Emergent CT scanning and stroke team available 24/7
  • IV TPA for all eligible patients up to 4.5 hours after symptom onset
  • Neurological services and Neuro ICU available onsite

Plastic Surgery Service

  • Plastic surgery available 24/7

Traumatic Injuries

  • Prepared for isolated fractures of extremities, hips and knees
  • Prepared to treat all traumatic injuries with the exception of multisystem major trauma. Multi-system major trauma is typically transferred to a Trauma Center

Orthopedic and Sports Emergencies

  • Able to handle all orthopedic injuries (exceptions for very specialized cases that can not be determined in the field).
  • Orthopedic services and surgery available 24/7

Ophthalmological Emergencies (Cornea and Globe)

  • Ophthalmologists on call 24/7. Will arrange transfer if needed

Pediatric Patients (Younger Than 16)

  • Ability to treat pediatric emergencies
  • Inpatient non-ICU pediatric beds available

Decontamination/Toxicological Emergencies

  • On-site decontamination shower for 1-4 patients. WFD MDU trailer outside our emergency room can emergently decontaminate up to 50 ambulatory patients per hour
  • Toxicologists on staff and available 24/7

Dialysis Emergencies

  • Emergent dialysis capabilities are available 24/7

Sexual Assaults (Adult and Pediatric)

  • SANE nurses are on duty 24/7

Bariatric Issues

  • Bariatric patients of any size for bariatric surgery
  • Safe handling and moving equipment available
  • Accredited as a Level 1A facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center
  • Network Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons

  • Social emergencies: ability to help with evaluation of abuse, neglect and mandated reporting

Specialty Services not handled at Saint Vincent Hospital

Stabilization and transfer can be accomplished in emergency room but unlikely to be admitted:

  • Transplant of digits
  • Pediatric psychiatric care
  • Trauma surgery
  • Complex spine cases
  • Pediatric intensive care

Saint Vincent Hospital’s intensive care services include a medical and surgical ICU, coronary care and pulmonary care units with infection control isolation.
