Resident Driven
Training at Saint Vincent Hospital provides excellent diagnostic and procedural training opportunities. The absence of fellows is key in ensuring that residents play a central and active role in clinical and educational aspects of the program including working 1:1 with Attendings in planning and performing interventional procedures and interpretation of imaging studies. Residents are provided lead roles in case preparation and presentation for interdisciplinary conferences including Mammography, Neurology, GI, Oncology and Cardiology. Two R4 Chief Residents work closely with program leadership for resident scheduling.
Faculty
Training at SVH radiology means joining a close-knit group of residents and teaching staff. Many of the current staff have trained as residents at SVH themselves, including the program director and associate program directors. Faculty are passionate about the program’s mission to prepare residents to be excellent diagnostic radiologists and to obtain fellowships if that is their chosen path.
Training in a Community Setting
Saint Vincent Hospital is a robust community teaching hospital located in Worcester, which is the second largest city in New England only one hour from downtown Boston. As such, Worcester boasts a very diverse patient population. Residents are exposed to a wide breadth and depth of pathology on clinical rotations and by the time of graduation, trainees will be proficient in all aspects of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and interventional skills expected of a diagnostic radiologist. Residents can select the ESIR track after 2 years to prepare them for IR training.
It cannot be over-stated enough how impactful it is to train as a resident in a program without fellows. The success of our residents is the sole focus of the program. The learning curve is incredibly steep and by the end of the first year, residents will already feel confident in performing minor imaging-guided procedures under direct supervision, and be prepared to transition to take independent diagnostic call with indirect supervision. By graduation our residents are well prepared to enter fellowship or independent practice. as highly competent and confident radiologists.
Resident Wellness
Residents have a demanding job and responsibilities, and resident wellness is a top priority and deeply integrated into the program with work and study schedules designed to support optimal work-life balance. The program also provides organized funded events and social outings.
