Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Thank you for your interest in the Saint Vincent Hospital Interventional Cardiology Training Program. Saint Vincent Hospital has a long history of cardiac innovation, performing the first Worcester-area open heart surgery in 1959. Applicants apply for the one-year fellowship with two candidates accepted each year. The fellowship aims to provide Interventional Cardiology fellows with clinical training that is well rounded and unique in the breadth of experience.
Our fellows receive a strong foundation in interventional cardiology. The program fulfills all the training requirements for interventional cardiology as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is fully accredited by ACGME. There are currently 4 cardiac catheterization suites with ongoing plans for expansion. Current Interventional fellows perform between 350 and 400 PCI’s during their fellowship training. There are currently 7 Interventionalists on faculty providing a broad teaching experience.
At the end of the training, fellows are well versed to take a leadership role in simple and complex coronary interventions, insertion and management of mechanical circulatory support devices, intravascular imaging and various coronary plaque modification techniques. All our Interventional fellows have been successful in both the academic as well as the private setting, and several of them are now Cath lab directors. In addition, Interventional Fellows can also gain significant experience in structural heart interventions such as atrial septal defect closure, patent foramen ovale closure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, balloon valvuloplasty, left atrial appendage occlusion and transcatheter mitral valve therapies.
In addition to our focus on excellence in clinical training, the program maintains weekly conferences comprising of cardiac catheterization conferences and core curriculum lectures which span throughout the year. Mortality and Morbidity conferences are held monthly. Our fellows remain academically productive despite being clinically busy, with many publishing manuscripts and presenting opportunities at national meetings.
Despite our busy clinical setting, we also emphasize appropriate work life balance. Future Interventional fellows will find that collegial support, flexible scheduling, and dedicated mentorship help foster a supportive environment. Balancing high quality clinical care with personal well-being is one of our top priorities. We maintain a “call from home” system with in-house support by overnight house staff. In addition to 4 weeks off paid, we offer dedicated leave time for national conferences such as SCAI, etc.
